The SpoorBase story:

SpoorBase started with two friends who invest in public markets in very different ways. One is a trader. The other is a value investor. Different strategies, different time horizons, different ways of looking at a stock, but we kept running into the same question: what are the people around this company doing?

The stock market is an uncertain place. No matter how much research you do, you are always making decisions with incomplete information. Part of doing good research is understanding how other people see the same business, especially when those people may have information, experience, or incentives that you do not. An insider buying shares, a hedge fund building a position, a member of Congress trading a stock, or a company buying back its own shares does not tell you what to buy. But it can give you another piece of the puzzle. Sometimes one that challenges your thinking, sometimes one that reinforces it, and often one that helps you build greater conviction in your own analysis or investment thesis.

That was the gap we kept seeing. The information existed, but it was scattered across different platforms: insider trading and SEC filings, hedge fund and institutional holdings, congressional stock trades, company buybacks and dilution. Each source showed one part of the picture. But when these pieces were brought together, the whole picture became greater than the sum of its parts. What looked like disconnected activity across different sources could reveal a much clearer picture of what the people and institutions around a company were actually doing.

So we built SpoorBase.
